CELEBRATING FATHERS WHO dive with their children is both meaningful and timely, especially as we approach Father’s Day on June 21. At Family Divers and Kids Sea Camp, we have been creating memorable family diving experiences for more than 26 years. Each year, we produce a special “The Good Dad” T-shirt that reads, “A good dad does not just tell you he loves you, he shows you.”
That message perfectly aligns with our family-of-divers logo and the heart of what we do at FamilyDivers.com.
Being a scuba dad is more than cool. It is deeply meaningful. There is nothing quite like giving a father the gift of diving with his child, or children, as his best buddy. Whether it is a father-daughter dive, a father-son dive, or a whole family dive, these shared moments create lasting bonds. Great parents understand that love is an action, and they share their passions with their kids.

Importantly, a dad does not have to be a biological father. He can be a mentor, stepdad, grandfather, uncle, or any positive male role model who brings energy, encouragement, and guidance to a child’s life.
Proven Father’s Day Promotions That Work
At Kids Sea Camp, we run a popular promotion that offers 50% off a dad’s dive package when he is diving with a family of three or more. We also provide a commemorative Father’s Day shirt and hat. Dads wear these shirts proudly for years afterward.
The response has been outstanding because the promotion speaks directly to what diving fathers want most, quality time underwater with their kids in a safe, supportive environment.
Dive shops can create their own Father’s Day promotions in a variety of ways. A few ideas include:
- A family day dive trip with dad at 50% off, offered as a gift certificate or coupon.
- A Father’s Day barbecue, oyster roast, or shop gathering paired with a special discount for dad on dive gear, dive trips, or classes.
- Local boat dives, lake dives, or gear promotions that celebrate multigenerational participation, including grandpa, dad, and the whole family.
For senior divers, remember to offer valet diving whenever possible. Grandparents will feel welcomed, cared for, and invigorated when diving with their grandkids, especially when the experience is set up correctly to meet their needs.
These events often bring three generations of divers together. Grandparents love joining family activities with their grandkids, and those shared experiences create powerful memories and long-term repeat business. We have also found that posting on social media and other multimedia platforms to celebrate parents who actively dive with their children builds strong community loyalty and inspires other families to participate.
What Makes a Dive Shop Truly Family-Friendly

To earn parents’ trust, especially dads who want to introduce or continue diving with their kids, dive shops must show that they understand the unique needs of family diving. Families are looking for more than a dive trip. They are looking for confidence, safety, comfort, and guidance.
Here are key practices that help set family-friendly dive operations apart.
Prepare Your Dive Team
Make sure your staff is confident, knowledgeable, and fully informed about the day’s conditions when diving with children. Sharing this knowledge openly signals to families that your operation is organized, safe, and professional.
Select Kid-Friendly Dive Sites
Offer dive sites that match each child’s profile, training level, experience, and comfort. Maintain a curated list of family-friendly locations with good visibility, little to no current, shallow areas for safe exploration, and interesting marine life or features that encourage learning.
Respect Age and Depth Limits
Know the exact depth limits and age requirements for each child. Children are small and usually need very little weight, so proper weighting is essential. Avoid over-weighting, provide proper tank sizes, and confirm that kids understand how to use their dump valves and BCDs.
When using rental gear, provide a thorough orientation on the specific brand and model. Computers and BCDs vary, and children need time to understand the equipment they are using.
Use Consistent Gas Planning
Remind families that air is the most conservative profile. If any family member is diving with 21% air, everyone should follow the same tables and set computers to 21%. Keeping the family on the same conservative profile helps simplify planning and supports a safer experience.

Confirm Physical and Mental Readiness
Children should be well-rested, hydrated, and both mentally and physically prepared for the dive. A tired, nervous, cold, hungry, or distracted child may not be ready to dive, even if the dive itself looks simple on paper.
Discuss Medication Awareness
Strongly advise parents never to give children over-the-counter medications, such as decongestants or antihistamines, before diving without proper medical guidance. These medications may contribute to dehydration, reverse blocks, or other serious concerns.
Always recommend that families consult their treating physician before diving with any medical condition or medication. Encourage full disclosure on waiver forms and direct families to Divers Alert Network as a reliable resource.
Monitor Local Conditions
Dive teams should carefully check tides, currents, weather, visibility, and daily conditions when diving locally with kids. The site you choose should be appropriate for the child’s certification level, experience, comfort, and ability.
Provide Experienced Guidance
Whenever possible, offer a private dive professional who has specific experience diving with children and knows the area well. A skilled guide should carry a diver tow marker buoy, manage dive time and children’s depth limits, use and explain proper safety signals, and maintain training standards throughout the dive.
This kind of experienced guidance makes the experience more relaxing and enjoyable for the entire family. It also builds trust and encourages long-term repeat divers.
Equip Families Properly
Keep rental gear in excellent working condition and make sure every child receives properly sized and fitted equipment. Provide information in the measurement units each family member understands, whether imperial or metric.

Dive shops that stock dedicated kids’ gear, small tanks, and properly sized exposure protection, and that employ experienced, kid-friendly staff, become the top choice for discerning parents.
Clear, thorough briefings are essential. Ask questions to confirm understanding, and provide information in both meters and feet when needed. Families appreciate the extra care, and children gain confidence when they understand what to expect.
Building Family Divers for Life
Father’s Day is more than a promotional opportunity. It is a chance to celebrate the dads, grandfathers, mentors, and male role models who help children fall in love with the underwater world.
When dive shops create safe, welcoming, and memorable family experiences, they do more than fill a boat or sell a class. They help build lifelong divers. They create stories families will tell for years. They strengthen relationships across generations.
Most importantly, they give dads a way to show love through action, by sharing the adventure, wonder, and joy of diving with the children they love.
