Some destinations offer the rare opportunity to enter the water with whales, while others provide spectacular encounters from the boat. Diveplanit’s Deborah Dickson-Smith shares her experience.

1. Swim with Dwarf Minke Whales – Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Every June and July, curious dwarf minke whales visit the Ribbon Reefs north of Cairns, offering one of the world’s most remarkable in-water wildlife experiences. Unlike many whale encounters, these interactions are entirely on the whales’ terms. Snorkelers hold onto floating ropes while the whales approach, sometimes circling repeatedly or remaining nearby for hours.

The Ribbon Reefs are the only place in the world where dedicated, regulated swim-with-dwarf-minke-whale expeditions operate, making this a truly unique Australian experience. Why it’s special: Close, often prolonged encounters with naturally curious whales, suitable for snorkelers and divers alike. Best time: June to July.

2. Swim with Humpback Whales – Tonga

Tonga is one of the world’s best destinations for swimming with humpback whales. Each winter, humpbacks migrate from Antarctic feeding grounds to Tonga’s warm tropical waters to mate, give birth and nurse their calves. The islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai offer exceptional opportunities to observe these magnificent animals underwater. Encounters may include mothers resting with their calves, playful juveniles or the haunting songs of male humpbacks echoing through the water.

Swimming is strictly regulated, with licensed operators and experienced guides ensuring encounters remain respectful of the whales. Why it’s special: The opportunity to observe humpback mothers and calves underwater in warm, clear tropical waters. Best time: July to October, with August and September generally offering excellent opportunities.

3. Humpback Whale Encounters – Niue

The tiny Pacific island nation of Niue offers one of the region’s most intimate whale-watching experiences. With deep ocean waters immediately offshore, humpbacks can sometimes be seen breaching just beyond the island’s dramatic limestone coastline. Each winter, humpbacks arrive to breed and give birth, and their songs can occasionally be heard by snorkelers and divers underwater.

Licensed operators offer whale-watching excursions and, when conditions and regulations permit, guided in-water encounters. Niue’s remarkably clear water and relatively uncrowded environment make this a particularly special destination. Why it’s special: Exceptional water clarity, close-to-shore sightings and the possibility of intimate humpback encounters in a remote Pacific setting. Best time: July to October, particularly August and September.

4. Blue Whales and Sperm Whales – Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste is emerging as one of the world’s most exciting destinations for whale enthusiasts. The deep waters of the Ombai and Wetar Straits form part of an important migration corridor used by several species of whales and dolphins. Among the most spectacular visitors are pygmy blue whales, which migrate through the region seasonally, and sperm whales, which can be encountered in the deep offshore waters.

The dramatic underwater topography around Atauro Island and the Timor-Leste coastline creates ideal conditions for observing large marine mammals. Specialist expeditions offer opportunities to search for whales, with in-water encounters dependent on local regulations, conditions and the animals’ behavior. Why it’s special: The chance to encounter some of the planet’s largest animals in a relatively unexplored marine wilderness. Best time: October to December for migrating pygmy blue whales; sperm whale sightings are less predictable and possible at other times.

5. Orca Encounters – Bremer Bay, Western Australia

Bremer Bay has become internationally famous for its extraordinary orca encounters. Between January and April, killer whales gather in the deep waters of the Bremer Canyon, creating one of Australia’s most thrilling marine wildlife spectacles. These highly intelligent apex predators are often observed hunting cooperatively, socializing and travelling in family pods. Other wildlife sightings can include pilot whales, sperm whales, dolphins and numerous seabirds.

Encounters take place from specialist whale-watching vessels, with excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. Why it’s special: One of the Southern Hemisphere’s most reliable destinations for observing wild orcas, often in large, active pods. Best time: January to April.

6.    Humpback Whale Watching – Hervey Bay, Queensland

Hervey Bay is widely regarded as Australia’s whale-watching capital. Each winter, humpbacks pause in the sheltered waters between K’gari (Fraser Island) and the Queensland mainland during their southern migration. Mothers and calves rest and socialize here, while curious adults frequently approach whale-watching vessels, spy-hop and slap their enormous pectoral fins on the surface.

The calm waters and relaxed behavior of the whales make Hervey Bay particularly appealing to families and photographers. Why it’s special: Close boat-based encounters, sheltered waters and excellent opportunities to observe mothers and calves. Best time: July to October.

7. Swim with Humpback Whales – Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

Ningaloo Reef offers another of Australia’s most exciting in-water whale experiences. During the annual humpback migration, licensed operators run guided snorkelling excursions in the clear blue waters off Exmouth. Unlike Tonga’s breeding grounds, Ningaloo is part of the whales’ migration route along the Western Australian coastline. Encounters are carefully managed, with swimmers entering the water only when conditions and whale behavior are suitable.

Ningaloo is also famous for its whale sharks, manta rays and spectacular coral reefs, making it an ideal destination for a combined diving and marine wildlife holiday. Why it’s special: The opportunity to swim with migrating humpbacks while exploring one of Australia’s most spectacular reef systems. Best time: August to October.

Responsible whale encounters: Whale encounters are among the most moving experiences we can have in the ocean, but the welfare of the animals must always come first. Choose licensed operators who follow local whale interaction guidelines, maintain appropriate distances and allow whales to determine whether an encounter takes place. Swimming with whales is not guaranteed, even in destinations where it is permitted. The best encounters happen when the animals are relaxed, curious and free to approach or move away.

From the tropical islands of Tonga and Niue to the deep migration corridors of Timor-Leste and Australia’s spectacular coastline, the region offers whale experiences to suit every marine wildlife enthusiast. Contact Diveplanit Travel to plan your next whale encounter, whether you’re looking for a dedicated whale-swimming expedition or a diving holiday with a chance to meet these magnificent ocean giants.
