From Texas to the BVIs… Jeff’s Unique Journey

by Jeff McNutt, Chief Operating Officer/Owner of Dive BVI

IN 1996, WHEN I FIRST signed up for a scuba class at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, I had no idea that a simple elective would set the course for the rest of my life. I was a college student just looking to try something new, unaware that the decision to step onto that pool deck would spark a lifelong passion and ultimately lead me to the British Virgin Islands and ownership of Dive BVI.

Learning to dive at SFA was nothing short of transformative. The university program was rigorous and deeply rooted in solid training principles – safety, discipline, situational awareness, and a profound respect for the underwater world. My first open-water dive is still vivid in my memory: the strange yet thrilling sensation of taking a breath underwater, the quiet that settled around me, the shift in perspective as the surface faded above. That moment changed everything.

I progressed quickly, working through my certifications one by one, driven by a newfound desire to understand everything about the sport. By the time I completed my Divemaster course – also at Stephen F. Austin – I knew diving would always be more than a hobby. The Divemaster training introduced me to leadership, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of what it meant to support and guide other divers. It was the first real step toward a professional future I hadn’t yet envisioned. My first big adventure as a dive pro was a 2-week stint at the Boy Scout Sea Base in the Florida Keys over the Christmas holidays. Talk about a lifestyle change from East Texas! But it further ignited my passion for boating, island life, and making the most of my opportunities.

In 2000, I earned my Open Water Scuba Instructor certification, marking a major milestone in my journey. Teaching diving became a passion of its own. I found immense fulfillment in helping new divers overcome fears, master skills, and experience the awe of the underwater world for the first time. Every student reminded me of the joy of discovery, and every class strengthened my belief that I had chosen the right path.

That path opened even wider in 2001 when, at just 25 years old, I became the manager of International Scuba in Carrollton, Texas. Taking on such a significant leadership role at a young age was challenging, energizing, and ultimately formative. I learned the business side of the industry – inventory management, retail operations, staffing, customer service, and community building. I gained invaluable insight into what makes a dive shop thrive and what it takes to maintain standards of excellence both above and below the surface.

While managing International Scuba, I began leading dive trips, guiding groups to incredible destinations around the world. And in October 2002, I led a trip that would alter my life’s trajectory forever: a group sailing and diving journey to the British Virgin Islands. I had never been to the BVI before, but I felt an immediate connection the moment I arrived. The shimmering turquoise water, the warm island atmosphere, and the stunning reefs and wrecks captured my heart instantly. By the end of the trip, I knew I would return – and a part of me didn’t want to leave at all.

The universe opened the door sooner than I expected. In February 2003, I was hired to work as a scuba instructor at Dive BVI. Moving to the islands felt like stepping into the life I didn’t realize I had been preparing for all along. Dive BVI embodied everything I valued in diving: professionalism, safety, camaraderie, and genuine care for both the marine environment and every diver who joined us. Being part of that team was more than a job – it was a privilege.

Over the years, I grew personally and professionally in the BVI. I trained countless divers, explored the islands’ iconic underwater sites, and became part of a community that felt like family. My role expanded as my experience deepened. I became the Fleet Manager in 2005 and later got promoted to General Manager in 2007. I learned from the best, contributed to the operation’s continued growth, and embraced the island lifestyle wholeheartedly.

In 2010, another major milestone arrived: I became an SSI Instructor Trainer. Earning this credential broadened my perspective more than I anticipated. Training instructors required a higher level of knowledge, planning, leadership, and professionalism. It wasn’t just about teaching divers anymore – it was about shaping the next generation of dive professionals. As an Instructor Trainer, I gained experience developing course programming, evaluating teaching techniques, and ensuring candidates understood not only the standards, but the spirit of safe and effective instruction. This role deepened my appreciation for diver education and expanded my ability to contribute to the industry in meaningful ways.

In 2017, after many fulfilling years with Dive BVI, I made the difficult decision to step away temporarily and take on a new challenge: serving as the Caribbean Business Manager for Scuba Schools International (SSI). This role offered a broader perspective of the dive industry, giving me the opportunity to work directly with dive centers across the Caribbean. I supported operators through training systems, professional development initiatives, and business growth strategies. It was a time of enormous learning – one that strengthened my leadership skills and expanded my understanding of the industry beyond a single shop or region.

In 2020, I embraced another opportunity and joined the Operations team at Aggressor Adventures. Working with Aggressor for 4.5 years allowed me to travel the world and see the dive industry on a truly global scale. My focus centered on quality control, safety systems, and professionalism – three pillars that define excellence in diving. I conducted evaluations, supported vessel teams, helped refine operational practices, and worked alongside professionals who shared a deep commitment to raising industry standards. Traveling to remote destinations, experiencing new cultures, and seeing how different operations excelled or struggled gave me invaluable insight into what it takes to run a world-class dive business.

Those years away provided tremendous growth and perspective – but through all the travel, learning, and professional challenges, the British Virgin Islands never left my heart. Every time I returned, whether for work or a brief visit, it felt like coming home. The connection to the islands, the community, and Dive BVI remained as strong as ever.

Eventually, the chance arose to return not just as part of the team, but as the Chief Operating Officer  – an opportunity that felt like the natural next chapter of a story that had begun back in 1996. Joining Dive BVI as an owner and COO meant embracing responsibility for a legacy built over decades. It meant committing to uphold the highest standards of safety, service, and professionalism. And it meant giving back to the place and people who helped shape me into the diver and leader I am today.

Today, owning Dive BVI is about honoring everything that brought me here: the early lessons at Stephen F. Austin State University, the joy of earning my Divemaster and Instructor credentials, the challenges of managing a dive shop at 25, the life-changing trip to the BVI in 2002, the years of teaching and community building from 2003 onward, and the broader experiences gained through SSI and Aggressor Adventures. Each chapter shaped the diver, the professional, and the person I’ve become.

Every time I help a new diver take their first breath underwater, I’m reminded of my own beginning. We all started with zero experience in diving. We must remember that our students can see and feel our passion. Every day at Dive BVI feels like a continuation of the journey that started nearly three decades ago. And every moment spent in the waters of the BVI reaffirms that this is where I’m meant to be. What began as a college elective in 1996 has become a lifelong calling – one that has come full circle in the most meaningful way. And, yes, I made an A in that college scuba class! Cheers.
